News from Oregon

Ace and Perry got to visit seniors on Wednesday (2/6) at an early Alzheimer's unit and Josie did a Canine Ambassador program in front of 178 kids on Thursday. (2/7) Dr. Lorain was there with us with her whippet, Pickles.  Most of the kids got to pet the dogs as they left the gym.  We were on stage with mats down so the dogs could do some jumping too.  Josie demonstrated a nice drop on recall.  We had a GSD (German Shepard Dog), Standard Poodle, Whippet, Basset Hound, Sussex Spaniel and Ms. Josie, so the kids learn a little about many different types of dogs, along with safety and responsibility.

Still to come this month are programs for the local Boys & Girls Club.  The total number of kids is 280; we're splitting them into two programs with the younger set the first week, and the 9 yr. old through teens the following week.

We hope to have News from Oregon every month

Get Involved

Forwarded from Vandra Huber (McVan Scottish Terriers):

Hi Everyone:
We need to get organized so we don't become the second California.  Remember, several animal extremist groups are located and headquartered in Seattle.  Please pass the word and attend (even if you don't attend the show).
Patti Strand from the NAIA (National Animal Interest Alliance) is hosting an important meeting that we all need to attend. The Seattle Kennel Club, along with NAIA, is hosting an "Organizing to Win" seminar on Friday, March 7, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at the
Hilton Garden Inn, 1801 E. Valley Road, in Renton and will be speaking to
help organize the people and clubs in Washington State to defeat Bills that
are currently being heard in the House and Senate. We all know that if we
do not organize NOW and show the AR's that we are united, it will only be a
matter of time before BSL and MSN is on our doorsteps like it is in other
states.  The registration fee for this seminar is $40 in advance, $50 at the
door with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the NAIA.  This will be
a fast-paced couple of hours exploring the issues and solutions facing the
relationship of humans and their animals in today's political world.  I plan
on attending and if anyone else is so inclined, go out to the Seattle Kennel
Club website at http://www.seattlekennelclub.org/, <http://www.seattlekennelclub.org/,> scroll down the home page and click on the 'Organizing to Win' link and it will take you to the registration form.

Staffy Stories

Well over twenty years ago, we miraculously found a Staffordshire Bull Terrier at a shelter.  As we researched Staffy literature, (we had no idea what we had) we repeatedly found the descriptive phrase, “nanny dog”.  Through the years, we have learned that coined phrase accurately describes attributes of many Staffordshire Bull Terriers.  Grace, our precious ‘dog-pound’ discovery, was attuned to feelings.  She would either sit quietly, commiserating, or clown it up when one of her people were blue - and her responses were always spot on.

One of our current Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Reina, is a health barometer.  When a sick grandchild arrives to spend the day in a sofa tent, Reina’s nurse/nanny dog instincts become apparent.  She shepherds them to the waiting bed and, within minutes, Reina will either gently settle in at the sick child’s side or vigorously encourage the hooky player to throw her tennis ball.

Kristy Strunks, owner of the very handsome Kane, has watched him play with her nephew and other children and try to teach them to tag him during running games.  Kristy has also noted marked differences in how he meets new people.  Normally greeting adults with exuberant joy, he is sometimes far more reserved, standing very still, except the ever wagging tail.  Kristy has learned this reserved behavior is usually an indication the individual has special needs.

Their intuitiveness, intelligence and their ability to radiate considerable body heat makes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier the consummate “nanny dog”.
